AMD Ryzen 7 7700X vs Intel Core i7-12700K

Which processor will be better AMD Ryzen 7 7700X vs Intel Core i7-12700K? On the one hand, we have the Ryzen 7 7700X chip which is a very good combination of performance and price. But we can’t deny that the very similarly priced Intel Core i7-12700K also aims to be a well-balanced CPU. To get rid of doubts with data in hand, we will see the specifications, price, and results in different performance tests of both processors.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X vs Intel Core i7-12700K: Specifications and price

The Ryzen 7 7700X with its new Zen 4 architecture packs 8 cores and 16 threads, while the Intel Core i7 12700K offers 12 cores (which we’ll talk about below), supporting a total of 20 threads.

The main thing that draws attention that we already intuit is a substantial performance improvement is the high clock speeds of the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, reaching 5850 MHz in one core (at the right temperatures).

These new AMD Ryzen 7000 processors (known as Raphael) are a new update to AMD’s Zen architecture, featuring the new AM5 (LGA1718) with DDR5 and PCI-Express 5.0 support. Their cores were fabricated at 5nm (previously 7nm), while the I/Os containing the remaining elements use 6nm lithography (previously 12nm).

Another of the substantial improvements of the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X fundamental change is the integration of integrated Radeon graphics based on RDNA 2 architecture.

Both this and the rest of the AMD Ryzen 7000 processors require motherboards with 600 series chipsets. In addition, it has an LGA1718 socket, which features a PCI-Express 5.0 interface and support for DDR5 memory. However, unlike Intel’s platform, support for DDR4 has been dropped entirely and this generation requires DDR5.

On the other hand, we have the Intel Core i7-12700K has 12 cores, of which only 8 are performance, while the rest are efficient cores. We’ve seen this change in Intel’s 12th Gen, where the performance keys are bigger, faster, and optimized for single-threaded performance.

Efficient cores are smaller, optimized for multi-core performance, and designed to excel at background tasks. This hybridization is one of the reasons why the Intel Core i7-12700K is a target competitor to the Ryzen 7 7700X, especially in multi-threaded scenarios.

The Intel Core i7-12700K comes with an Intel UHD Graphics 770 at a base frequency of 300Mz. This is more than enough for esports and most games.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X vs Intel Core i7-12700K: Performance tests

If we see some performance comparisons in games, we will realize that the Ryzen 7 7700X achieves better results. However, we have also come across performance graphics like PurePC where the Intel Core i7-12700K achieves higher FPS at 1080p than the AMD, for example when playing Cyberpunk 2077 or Witcher 3.

It should be noted that the differences in most cases are minimal, except for some specific tests where very disparate data are reflected.

Everything changes when we compare the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X vs Intel Core i7-12700K in applications and programs. Here the difference in performance is not too big either, although in some programs like Photoshop and Lightroom the Ryzen 7 7700X generally gets better performance and rendering, according to UL’s Procyon tests (the creators of 3DMark).

However, we also find that when testing both CPUs in Premiere Pro, it is the Intel Core i7-12700K that has a big advantage over AMD.

In the case of evaluating the performance of its integrated graphics in some benchmarks such as iGPU, Intel indeed makes the difference. It gets up to 27% more points than AMD.

Except for a few apps like these, the Ryzen 7 7700X and i7-12700K perform identically, but in some cases, Intel offers better numbers due to having more cores. Overall I would give it a tie as the average difference between the two is negligible.

In short: Which CPU is more recommended?

We don’t have a clear winner when comparing the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X vs Intel Core i7-12700K on performance. Perhaps the Ryzen 7 7700X is not worth it when compared to the results of the Ryzen 9 7950X, although they have achieved very good data in programs such as Lightroom or Photoshop as well as in most games.

Being able to configure it at 65 W in Eco Mode is also something to applaud when it comes to consuming less energy without losing performance. There’s also the fact that the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X and the Intel Core i7-12700K cost roughly the same, so both are highly recommended.

Although it doesn’t take away for Intel to be faster on raw multi-core workloads. And, of course, without forgetting the 13th Gen. Intel that is already on the market.
