AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and AMD Ryzen 5 7600X

Now that the latest AMD Ryzen 7000 processors are on the market, we can see all the best that these new desktop CPUs bring us for the most demanding gamers. This new series from AMD comes with a new 5nm node and an AM5 socket with which it achieves higher clock speeds along with higher power consumption and, of course, higher performance.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and AMD Ryzen 5 7600X are accompanied by two other processors: the Ryzen 9 7950X and the Ryzen 7 7700X. All four CPUs include a new 6nm I/O array, integrated graphics, and support for DDR5 and PCIe 5.0. In this way, they manage to balance the characteristics that the new Intel Core 12 processors have.

AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and AMD Ryzen 5 7600X Performance

As expected, in this new AMD Ryzen 7000 series we will obtain a notable increase in performance at the productivity level, which also translates into gains for gaming. In fact, we are talking about a 19% increase in mono-core from the Ryzen 5600X to the 7600X according to data from Cinebench R23.

This bump makes the new Ryzen 9 7900X beat the 5950X in the multi-threaded Cinebench test despite having four cores and eight fewer threads. Never imagine what the 7950X is capable of.

Moving on to Handbrake’s transcoding results, the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 7900X is 13% faster than the 5950X when it comes to H.264 encoding and slightly less for H.265. The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, meanwhile, beats the 5800X and 5800X3D with an average transcoding frame rate of 20fps.

The energy consumption also increases compared to the predecessors, although an exaggerated rise is not noticeable. The 6900X + X670E system consumed 288 W maximum, compared to 237 W for the 5950X + X570, an increase of 21%. It will be interesting to see if the cooling systems and additional power unlock significant performance gains.

Although the Ryzen 5000 seemed to offer full utilization right out of the box, a switch to a new socket coupled with AMD’s goal of more power could mean more overclocking headroom to be discovered.

Ryzen 9 7900X and Ryzen 5 7600X in Flight Simulator 2020 and Hitman 3

To get some more data, let’s see how the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and AMD Ryzen 5 7600X perform in two games that are a severe test for these new CPUs: Flight Simulator 2020 and Hitman 3. We will also see a light comparison with the Intel Core 12.

Flight Simulator 2020

Flight Simulator is quite a CPU-demanding game even at 1440p and high settings. Both the 7600X and 7900X achieve good results, achieving higher average frame rates than we’re used to seeing.

The 7900X is 5% faster than the 12900K when both use 6000MT/s of RAM, but if we look at the outgoing Ryzen 9 5950X with DDR4-3600 vs. the 7900X + DDR5-6000, the advantage is 24%. Going from 5200 MT/s to 6000 MT/s only brings 10% more for both AMD CPUs.

Hitman 3

In Hitman 3 it appears that the Intel Core i9-12900K outperforms the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X with both having access to DDR5-6000 RAM, albeit with a small 3% margin. Where we do see a big increase of up to 20% is when comparing the 5950X vs. the 7900X, with the 7600X up 28% using the faster RAM configuration. Once again, the 5800X3D is still an outlier, and this time it maintains the highest average frame rate at 5% even above the Ryzen 7900X with DDR5-6000.

A good update from AMD that fails to scare the Intel Core 12

The new Ryzen 7000s are a big step forward for AMD, regaining a footing to compete with Intel’s 12th Gen chips with the addition of integrated graphics on all models and PCIe 5.0/DDR5 support. These chips are also significantly faster than their Ryzen 5000 predecessors, with the move to DDR5, higher clock speeds, and higher power targets all contributing.

It is worth mentioning that the 7950X seems to be a very good bet for content creators who can make use of its high core count and improved single-core speeds. On the other hand, the 7700X may be a popular choice among gamers who also want an octa-core solution.

However, it will be necessary to see how the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and AMD Ryzen 5 7600X behave against the new Intel Core 13 which promises an even greater advantage over the Core 12.
