NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Features
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 is the flagship of this family of GPUs that comes with 3rd generation RT cores, 4th generation tensor units, and 3 DLSS. Its main novelty is found in the new Ada Lovelace architecture with many improvements compared to the Ampere of the RTX 3000.
These developments are found in an increase in L2 cache, GPC blocks and the introduction of 4th generation Tensor drives and 3rd generation RT drives. The goal of this is to increase ray tracing performance and improve (further) the DLSS technique. This enhances the image, multiplies the number of frames, and removes the bottleneck with the processor.
Another novelty is the implementation of 5nm TSMC technology with which they add more than twice as many transistors and allow higher clock speeds. When compared to its predecessor, we find an increase of up to 70% in rasterization, 110% in ray tracing, and up to 400% in DLSS.
It also uses the AD102 graphics chip with 11 GPC blocks, which translates to 16384 CUDA processors, 512 texture units, 128 render units, 128 RT cores, and 512 tensors.
Other updates are its 24 GB GDDR6X on a 384-bit bus at a clock speed of 21,000 MHz, which provides a total of 1000 GB / s of bandwidth. It also uses the PCI-Express 4.0 x16 interface and has a TDP of 450 W, similar to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.
The base GPU frequency of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 is 2235 MHz, even reaching 2700-2800 MHz in Boost. This is a 55% increase over the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090: Performance Tests
The best way to see the performance of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 is to see how it behaves in different settings, both 1440p and 4K, which is where it aims to stand out against the RTX 3090.
To give you an idea, we have compiled the FPS achieved by both GPUs in major AAA games such as Forza Horizon 5, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Y Cyberpunk 2077.
The RTX 4090 manages a massive 223fps at 1440p, and even with ray tracing enabled, it manages to achieve an impressive 167fps frame rate.
For example Watch Dogs: Legion achieves 132 fps without ray tracing enabled, which is a 36% performance increase over its predecessor.
On the other hand, the RTX 4090 manages 114 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 with max settings and psycho-ray tracing, and DLSS 2 quality enabled.
RTX 4090 (4K)
If when comparing the performance with the RTX 3090 in 1440p we see an increase of up to 50%, in the case of 4K games we are talking about an approximate advantage of 70%. Without a doubt, the RTX 4090 is a real beast for 4K gaming.
playing Cyberpunk 2077 At 4K with the RTX 4090 almost 140 fps is achieved on average with everything maxed out, i.e. with psycho-ray tracing and DLSS 3 performance mode enabled.

RTX 4090 power consumption and temperature
If we look at the data regarding the consumption of the RTX 4090 provided by PurePC, we see that both with default settings and overclock, it achieves better results than the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080 Ti. At least in Boost mode, since with normal settings, it does go up slightly compared to these two.
Testing GPU temperatures on The Witcher 3, we see that even in overclocking it achieves a slightly lower temperature than NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. In this graph from PurePC, the shortest bar is the idle temperature, the middle bar is the temperature under load at factory settings, and the longest bar is the temperature under load after overclocking.
The performance increase of up to 70% in rasterization that the Ada Lovelace architecture provides to the NVIDIA Geforce RTX 4090 is crazy. That is speaking in 2560×1440 and 3840×2160 resolutions because the bottleneck usually appears in 1920×1080. Therefore, comparing it with a GPU for FHD is nonsense.
We must also take into account the requirement to use a 16-pin PCIe 5.0 connector or four 8-pin connectors, something that can lead in some cases to replacing the power supply of our gaming PC.
