How to download macOS from Windows

If you want to download a version of macOS on Windows, you can use a program that allows you to create a bootable USB stick ( like formatting a USB stick ), well aware that it is not something that Apple allows you to do (read it is not legal).

The easiest way is to create a bootable key for Windows directly from Mac.

Create a bootable key for Windows from Mac

The first step to installing macOS on a PC is to create a bootable USB with macOS on it. This requires a Mac with access to the Mac App Store and a USB stick of at least 15GB.

MacOS download

  1. Start the App Store on the Mac. Search and download the latest version of macOS as indicated in the previous paragraph.

Create the USB key

  1. Now restart your Mac and hold down Command + R to enter recovery mode.
  2. Release the Command + R key when you see the Apple icon and progress bar on the screen. Now, wait for macOS Recovery to load.
  3. Click on Utilities and then on Terminal. When the Terminal opens, type
    • csrutil disable
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Wait until the terminal displays a message that SIP has been disabled.
  6. Click on the Apple menu and restart your Mac.
  7. When the Mac starts up, plug in the USB stick
  8. Open Disk Utility (from the Applications folder or Launchpad, writing disk utility) and in the left column, select the USB drive
  9. Click on Delete.
  10. A pop-up menu will appear, select a name for the USB drive and choose the macOS Extended (Journaled) format
  11. Click on Delete.
  12. Click on Done.
  13. Download the Unibeast app corresponding to the macOS version
  14. Launch the Unibeast app
  15. Click Continue and accept until the app is ready for use
  16. Finally, you will see a window with the USB drive you configured earlier. Then, click Continue.
  17. Select the macOS version and click Continue.
  1. Select UEFI Boot Mode or Legacy Boot Mode, and click Continue. If you have older hardware, you need to select legacy boot mode
  2. Choose whether you are using an NVIDIA or ATI graphics card and click Continue.
  3. Finally, confirm your selection and click Continue
  4. Enter the password if required and click OK.
  5. Unibeast will create the installation media. This process may take some time

How to install macOS on Windows PC using the installation USB

Now that you have the boot drive ready, here’s how to install it on your Windows PC.

Remove the key from the Mac and connect it to the PC you wish to turn into a Hackintosh. This is a fairly lengthy process that involves formatting the drive in your PC and performing a clean install of macOS, which means you will lose all data. If you do not wish to format or erase the drive, you will need to remove it and install a different one before proceeding. Also, check that your Windows computer is compatible.

  1. With the key inserted, boot the Windows PC from USB. If your PC is set to boot from USB, you will see the Clover screen without having to do anything. If not, you will have to press F8, F11, F12, or the appropriate key for the motherboard to choose the USB drive as the boot device.
  1. Select Boot macOS Install from Install macOS [version].
  2. Select the desired language and click Continue. Then, from the macOS utility menu, select Disk Utility.
  3. You will now find the PC hard drive in the left column. Click on it
  4. Click on Delete.
  5. Select a new name for your Drive and choose APFS as the format
  6. Click on Delete
  7. Click on Done.
  8. Return to the macOS Utility main menu and select Install macOS
  9. Click on Continue.
  10. Click Continue to proceed with the installation of macOS on the PC.
Once the installation process is complete, your PC will reboot. If macOS doesn’t load automatically, select the macOS version from the bootloader.

Complete the setup

You now have a PC with macOS installed and, depending on your system, you may have some problems such as peripherals or graphics cards.

Even if everything works correctly, it is recommended to install an appMultibeast, to configure the installation so that everything is set up properly.

  1. Download the Multibeast app for your operating system
  2. Run the Multibeast app
  3. You will find a quick start menu in the upper right corner. Select UEFI boot mode or legacy boot mode depending on your PC requirements.
  4. Click on Driver and select the audio drivers required for the hardware.
  5. Click on Bootloader to select the desired bootloader.
  6. Click Create and verify and save your settings.
  7. Click Install and enter the password if required.
  8. Finally, you will see a screen with the message Installation successful. Now you can restart your computer
  9. For problems, restart the Multibeast app and change your selections

How to download macOS to USB stick

To do this, you need a copy of the installer downloaded in the first paragraph and a USB stick formatted as Mac OS Extended, with at least 14GB of available storage space.

The High Sierra to Monterey installers downloads to the Applications folder. If the program starts automatically, close it.

For OS X El Capitan, you will find it in the Downloads folder as a disk image named. To get the installer:InstallMacOSX.dmg

  1. Inside the disk image, there is an installer calledInstallMacOSX.pkg
  2. The file installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan in the Applications folder. Create the bootable installer from this app, not from the disk image or the .pkg installer.

You are now ready to create the bootable USB stick.

  1. Connect the USB flash drive for the bootable installer.
  2. Open Terminal by selecting it in the Utility subfolder of the Applications folder.
  3. Type or paste the following command into Terminal (valid from High Sierra to Monterey). The program must be located in the Applications folder and indicate the name of the USB flash drive as MyVolume. If the volume has a different name, replace MyVolume in these commands with the name of your volume. In place of the macOS version, enter the name of the operating system. In the case of High Sierra and Big Sur, you need to enter Big \ Sur. app or High \ Sierra. app
    • sudo / Applications / Install \ macOS \ –volume / Volumes / MyVolume
  4. In the case of El Capitan, the command is as follows
    • sudo / Applications / Install \ OS \ X \ El \ Capitan. app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume / Volumes / MyVolume –application path / Applications / Install \ OS \ X \ El \ Capitan. app
  5. Press Enter
  6. When prompted, type the administrator password and press Enter again. As you type the password, the characters are not displayed in the Terminal.
  7. When prompted, type Y to confirm that you want to initialize the volume, then press Enter. The terminal shows the progress while initializing the volume.
  8. After the volume has been initialized, you may see a warning indicating that the Terminal wants to access files on a removable volume. Click OK to proceed with the copy.
  9. When the Terminal announces the completion of the procedure, the volume will have the same name as the downloaded installer, for example, MacOS Monterey Installation. At this point, you can close the Terminal app and eject the volume.
