What does it mean to reset the iPhone

As anticipated, resetting the iPhone means performing a factory reset involving deleting information and settings from the iPhone (or iPad or iPod) and installing the latest version of the iOS, iPadOS, or iPod software.

There are two ways to initialize the iPhone: from settings, or by connecting iPhone to a computer via a USB cable and using the Finder or iTunes. The first method is the simplest, in the second case to proceed you need to use a Mac or a PC to connect the iPhone and make sure of the following requirements:

  • Make sure your Mac or pc is up to date
  • Make a backup if you want to save the information and data contained in the iPhone
  • Disable the “Where is” option

  • Click “Summary”, then click “Restore iPhone”.

The computer may ask for the code of the iPhone or the computer itself, which must be kept handy.

As mentioned, you can also reset the iPhone directly from the phone settings. To do it:

  • Access the settings
  • Tap on “General” and then on “Transfer or erase iPhone”

At this point you can choose between two different options:

  • Prepare your data and settings for transfer to a new iPhone: tap “Get started”, then follow the onscreen instructions. When finished, go back to Settings> General> Transfer or Erase iPhone and tap “Erase Contents and Settings”.
  • Initialize all data on iPhone: proceed directly with the reset by tapping on “Initialize contents and settings”.

How to reset iPhone without erasing data

You can also restore the iPhone to its default settings without erasing its contents. In this case, the device will revert to factory settings, but everything in it – from photos to other data – will be kept. To do this, you need to:

  • Access the settings
  • Tap on “General” and then on “Transfer or erase iPhone”
  • Tap on “Initialize”

At this point it is possible to choose between:

  • Reset All Settings: All settings, including network settings, keyboard dictionary, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards, are removed or reset to the default version. Data and media files are not deleted.
  • Reset network settings: All network settings are removed. Also, the device name assigned in Settings> General> About is reset to “iPhone” and manually trusted certificates (such as those for websites) are set to untrusted. Cellular data roaming may be disabled. By resetting the network settings, previously used networks and VPN settings not installed through a configuration profile or mobile profile management (MDM) are removed. The Wi-Fi functionality was disabled and then re-enabled, disconnecting the iPhone from any network it had previously connected to. The Wi-Fi and “Request to join networks” settings remain active.
  • Reset keyboard dictionary: You can add words to the keyboard dictionary by rejecting the words iPhone suggests when typing. When you restore the keyboard dictionary, only the words added later are deleted.
  • Restore Home Screen Layout: Restores the original layout of the built-in apps on the Home screen.
  • Reset Location and Privacy: Reset the location and privacy settings to their original settings.
