iPad (2022) vs iPad (2021): Redesign and new colors

iPad (2022) vs iPad (2021) Redesign and new colors

As always when we see a new device model like the iPad, the first thing we look at is the design. Between this year’s iPad and the previous one, significant changes can be seen with the naked eye.

On the front, the bottom home button disappears and the bezels are reduced quite a bit, making the screen appear larger regardless of the extra 0.7″. The body now features a flat back and sides to keep it in line with newer Apple devices.

The fact that the home button has disappeared does not mean that the iPad 2022 will keep Touch ID, now located on the power button in the upper right corner. In addition, to adapt to the regulations, the new iPad 10th Generation replaces the Lightning port with a USB-C

The webcam is finally found on the right side so that we can make video calls or attend online classes with the iPad 2022 horizontally. This change is important since with the iPad 2021 it was quite uncomfortable to hold it vertically or to frame us well when putting it horizontally.

And for the most detail, the new iPad arrives in more colors. While the 2021 iPad can be had in space gray or silver, the new 2022 iPad can be purchased in silver, blue, pink, and yellow.

iPad (2022) vs iPad (2021): Bigger screen and better performance

The new iPad 2022 gets almost an inch more than the iPad 2021. This is achieved by removing the home button and reducing the bezels almost to the maximum.

However, the level of size is very similar in both models. We also found a slight increase in resolution, going from a 264ppi 2160 x 1620 pixel Liquid Retina display to a screen with the same pixel density and 2360 x 1640 pixels.

Where we also see an increase and news is in performance. The new iPad 2022 comes with an A14 Bionic chip that increases CPU power by 20% and GPU power by 10%.

What we do not understand is why Apple has not equipped this new iPad 2022 with the A15 Bionic that we find in the iPad Mini 2021.

iPad (2022) vs iPad (2021): Better positioned front camera

As we told you at the beginning, the new iPad 2022 has changed the place where the front camera for video calls is located, going from being at the top to the right side. This big change will substantially improve comfort when making video calls with the iPad in landscape.

On the other hand, the rear camera is also updated on the iPad 2022 compared to the iPad 2021, moving to a 12MP sensor with the ability to record 4K video.

In the previous iPad, we have a wide camera of only 8MP. Although in this type of device I think the front camera is more important than the rear one, it is a detail to take into account.

iPad (2022) vs iPad (2021): Improvements in connectivity

Another of the novelties that we find in the new iPad 2022 is the compatibility with WiFi 6. With this, we will have greater wireless speed in terms of connectivity in addition to the greater raw power of the device.

This joins the possibility of finding a Cellular version with 5G. Instead, if we look at the iPad 2021 we will have to settle for WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) and 4G LTE connectivity.

iPad (2022) vs. iPad (2021): Price

As Apple has accustomed us when it launches other new devices, the new iPad 2022 has increased its initial price compared to the iPad 2021.

Is it worth upgrading to the new iPad (2022)?

Although the new iPad 2022 is more expensive than the iPad 2021, we do find some new features that could justify its price. Apple has completely redesigned this new tablet, offering a larger screen, more performance, and a more modern appearance.

Although we will have to wait to see how these new iPads evolve, it may be worth raising our budget a bit to get the new model. But if you are not sure, you can always read our guide on what iPad to buy and see others in comparison.
